The benefits of physical therapy

The latest breaking updates, delivered straight to your email inbox.

Physical therapy is a combination of many things related to improving someone's affected movement ability.

Dr. Abinash Achrekar, KOAT and University of New Mexico health expert, explains how the practice can improve a person's quality of life.

"Physical therapy is about helping people move better and feel stronger," Achrekar said. "Physical therapists are experts in understanding how our muscles, bones, and joints work together. With physical therapy, patients receive hands-on care, learn exercises, and understand ways to avoid future injuries."

People come in for a variety of issues, such as back pain or more long-term conditions like Parkinson's disease. Physical therapists are expected to adapt to their patient's needs to better their health.

"They create custom plans that might include stretching, strengthening exercises, or hands-on techniques to improve movement," Achrekar said.

There can be several benefits from the type of therapy, which includes avoiding surgery by treating pain or injuries. Another benefit can be a reduced need for pain medications.

"Another big benefit is improved mobility—making it easier to walk, bend, or climb stairs," Achrekar said. "Physical therapy can even boost mental health. When people move better and feel stronger, they're often happier and less stressed."
